Some memories from Aruba

Over Christmas, My parents treated me to an amazing all-inclusive vacation down in Aruba with some of their friends that they’ve made over the years in Indiana. Though the lack of any reasonable fast internet connection completely halted my ability to work during the vacation, I was very grateful for the opportunity to literally almost do nothing for a week, rest, and reflect. At this rate I probably won’t take another extended vacation again until the next winter break, so I really do cherish these memories.

We spent almost our entire time at our resort – the Tamarijn Aruba – and its beach. We’d originally planned for a snorkeling trip but due to rains it got canceled. It’s a wonderful beach, beautiful sand, plenty of activities. Food was okay, I liked the snack bar the most. It was my first all-inclusive vacation doing nothing but relax and swim and play sports, so it was a bit of a new concept. I even managed to read 4 books

We did take half a day to explore Oranjestad. It was mostly touristy stalls peddling wares we were not interested in. However, I found some beautiful buildings to photograph

Or even… just a structure in a parking lot. Love this blue! And yes, I have a new haircut =)

Tada! The official 2010 Chen family holiday portrait. I normally do not advocate all-white outfits for portraits (unless we’re talking about a wedding dress), but for a beach portrait, they really do work well

We (the kids) also did some light painting at night. These took a couple of tries and I’m sure my shouting and directing attracted some attention from some of the other vacationers at the resort

Most of the light sources were iPods or phones. We didn’t have any of those fancy light thingys that I’ve seen other photographers use. Set your ISO very low, small aperture, forcing the camera to have a long shutter speed. Then paint! I wish I had a tripod though…
